MAPSERVICES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE THROUGH OCGI and SCI

and INSTRUCTIONS ON THEIR USE

GENERAL INFORMATION

The OCGI Webserver currently is hosting two publicly available Mapservices for users of ArcGIS 8.x or other OpenGIS computing platforms.  These services are listed in the table below, and are open to use by any user.  Also provided on this page is a brief description of Mapservices in general and how an ArcGIS user can access the Mapservices on this host for use in their projects.

OCGI provides online Mapservices in Image Service format, which provides the end user with the fastest method of accessing data directly served from an ArcIMS Host.  These services send a geograchically referenced and linked "map" that will open directly in ArcMap (or other compatible GIS platform), and can be used by the end user in any manner a normal shapefile or geodatabase can be used.  However, because the services provide the user with a "static" form of data transfer, the user cannot reconfigure the display characteristics of the layers with in the service, or offload the data directly to the the workstation.

Feature Services actually transfer the complete datasets to the end user workstation, and while initially displaying the data as defined by the host server, the end user has a great deal of latitude in reconfiguring how the various layers are displayed, and the data can also be permanently saved to the workstation machine as well.  However, the network transfer requirements for using Feature Services are much greater than for Image Services so the end user must take this into account.  However, due to bandwidth and server processing limits, OCGI does not currently provide data in Feature Service format.

Also, if the data being served is of a proprietary and sensitive nature, the manager of the host server may choose to only provide the data as an Image Service.  This allows the user to have access to and use the data, although the host server has maintained a certain level of control over how the data is displayed and offloading of the base data to the workstation.

DATA USE INSTRUCTIONS

The Mapservices available from OCGI are housed at one of the following URL addresses: www.ocgi.okstate.edu or maps.scigis.com.  The Vector Based Data (boundaries, roads, points, etc.) are at www.ocgi.okstate.edu, with a secondary mapservice provided at maps.scigis.com.  The Mosaic Versions of the Raster Images are housed at maps.scigis.com.  All downloadable data is housed at www.ocgi.okstate.edu.

In order to use the Mapservices in ArcMap or ArcCatalog, you will need to add one or both of these Internet Servers to the available servers listed in ArcCatalog or in the Add Data Dialog in ArcMap.  Once this server has been added to the listing, it will remain available in future Arc sessions.  After adding the Internet Service, the user can select the desired Mapservice from the service listing.
