DESCRIPTION: THE SPIRO MOUND GROUP CONSISTS OF A CEREMONIAL MOUND GROUP (9 MOUNDS IN ALL) AND THE ASSOCIATED VILLAGE AREA WHICH WAS OCCUPIED DURING THE PERIOD FROM 1150 TO 1450 A.D. EXCAVATIONS WERE CONDUCTED AT THIS SITE BETWEEN 1936 TO 1941. EVIDENCE FOUND INDICATES THAT SPIRO WAS A VERY IMPORTANT RELIGIOUS AND POLITICAL CENTER DURING THE LATE PREHISTORIC PERIOD. LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER 9/30/1969.
