DESCRIPTION: FORT DAVIS WAS ESTABLISHED TO SERVE AS A CONFEDERATE STRONGHOLD IN INDIAN TERRITORY. THE PRESENCE OF CONFEDERATE TROOPS IN THE AREA WAS TO AID IN THE STRUGGLE TO KEEP INDIAN TERRITORY LOYAL TO THE SOUTH AND TO PREVENT A FEDERAL INVASION OF TEXAS FROM THE NORTH. AT ITS PEAK, THE FORT INCLUDED 13 WOODEN BUILDINGS. THE FORT WAS CAPTURED BY UNION TROOPS IN DECEMBER 1862 AND THE FORT WAS BURNED. LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER 11/23/1971.
