DESCRIPTION: CONSTRUCTED IN 1874 OF LOCALLY QUARRIED SANDSTONE, THE CHEROKEE NATIONAL PRISON WAS THE REPOSITORY OF PRISONERS TRIED AND SENTENCED AT EITHER THE DISTRICT OR SUPREME COURTHOUSES OF THE CHEROKEE NATION. OUTSIDE THE PRISON STOOD THE GALLOWS, THE ULTIMATE DESTINY FOR MANY PRISONERS. THE ORIGINAL SECOND FLOOR OF THE BUILDING WAS REMOVED AND A FLAT ROOF INSTALLED. LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER 6/28/74
