DESCRIPTION: THE PAULS VALLEY HISTORIC DISTRICT IS A COMMERCIAL DISTRICT ENCOMPASSING 14 BLOCKS OF THE DOWNTOWN AREA. IT CONTAINS THE CORE OF COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN PAULS VALLEY BUILT BETWEEN 1893 AND 1910. THE BOUNDARIES OF THE HISTORIC DISTRICT RUN APPROXIMATELY FROM THE SANTA FE RAILROAD NORTHWEST OF GRANT TO THE CENTER OF JOY STREET, WALNUT STREET, GUY STREET,AND WILLOW STREET. PAULS VALLEY WAS SETTLED IN 1846 AND BECAME THE ECONOMIC CAPITAL OF THE CHICKASAW NATION. THE ARRIVAL OF THE SANTA FE RAILROAD IN THE 1880S SPURRED SIGNIFICANT COMMERCIAL GROWTH. THE BUILDINGS WITHIN THE DISTRICT ARE REFLECTIVE OF THAT AND SUBSEQUENT GROWTH. SOME SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS WITHIN THE DISTRICT INCLUDE THE 1906 CITY HALL, THE CIRCA 1890 FRATERNAL BUILDING, AND THE 1898 W.J. LONG BUILDING. LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER 2/1/79.
